Lighting - Controls

Once appropriately efficient light sources have been selected, you should also review their method of control. Type of controls, convenience, automatic on-off features and location all influence lighting system efficiency and energy consumption.

Examples of available lighting controls include:

Breaker panel control (primitive but functional for large areas),
Switching control (light switches to control specific spaces),
Dimmer switch control (to reduce the intensity of light - this is generally not recommended for fluorescent lights),
Photoelectric cells (to turn lights off during daylight),
Photo-controlled dimmer (combination of dimmer and photocell),
Time clock (to periodically change light operation),
Electronic sensing devices (heat, sound, light and movement sensitive controls),
Programmable scheduler (to give maximum scheduling flexibility while maintaining time control).
